Author Michael Crichton Dies

By Wyatt Earp | November 5, 2008

Damn. Truly a great literary talent.

Seriously folks, we really need to find a cure for cancer. And we need to do it as soon as possible. We are losing far too many terrific people from this terrible, despicable disease.

LOS ANGELES, California — Michael Crichton, who helped create the TV show “ER” and wrote the best-sellers “Jurassic Park,” “The Andromeda Strain,” “Sphere” and “Rising Sun,” died in Los Angeles on Tuesday, his public relations firm said in a news release.

He “died unexpectedly,” the release said, “after a courageous and private battle against cancer.”

He was 66.

Crichton, a medical doctor, was attracted to cautionary science tales. “Jurassic Park” — perhaps his best-known work — concerned capturing the DNA of dinosaurs and bringing them to life on a modern island, where they soon run amok; “The Andromeda Strain,” his first major fiction success, involves an alien microorganism that’s studied in a special military compound after causing death in a nearby community. Writers like Crichton simply amaze me. To be so talented and full of great ideas is a blessing, and here I sit, struggling with one decent book idea. Dang.

You have a book idea? Dang, I need one of those.

In all seriousness, Crichton was an awesome writer, and will be missed.

  2. USA_Admiral says:

RIP Michael. Your works will be missed.

Loved his work. As far as the cancer, I have a relative that’s I’ve recently blogged about. The “cure” might kill him faster than the cancer! We do need to find a way to stop it NOW!

  4. Old NFO says:

His writing will be missed! Agreed, we need to find a cure, the sad part is the different cancers do not react the same to treatment. RIP Michael!

  5. RT says:

I tried to get my school to allow me to teach Andromeda Strain. I think I’ll try again.

    I liked the movie, too.

  6. Wyatt Earp says:

JumpOut – I have a lot of things floating around in my head. Mostly images of Jessica Biel.

    Admiral – Amen to that.

Trek – And there has been so much funding thrown its way already. I’m beginning to think it’s hopeless.

Old NFO – It’s a tricky little bastard, that cancer is.

RT – Loved Jurassic Park. Book and film.

  7. momster says:

I got one of the worst sun burns of my life laying in my back yard reading the Andromeda Strain. It is a tragic loss but his words will live on forever.

  8. Wyatt Earp says:

Deanna – Agreed. A tremendous loss.

Momster – Maybe the Andromeda Strain was sunburn!

  9. Ky Person says:

I’ve read most of Michael Crichton’s books – some were very good and some were meh, but when he was good there was none better.

Read Climate of Fear where he totally rips up the Global Warming crowd.

  10. Wyatt Earp says:

Ky person – I’ll put it on the list.
