Philadelphia’s Everyday Heroes
By Wyatt Earp | October 17, 2008

Friend, co-worker, and occasional reader Wagonsux made the news this week. And for a change, an officer was portrayed in a positive light. Wagonsux received the July Officer of the Month Award from his district this week, and I wanted to embarrass him further. Yeah, he’s going to kick my ass for posting this, but I don’t care. The actions performed are worthy of mention here. Here is the segment from a local newspaper – I won’t say which one, because Wagonsux revels in his privacy.
Officer Wagonsux was selected for the July [Officer of the Month] honor after capturing four suspects in a gunpoint robbery at Pollock Playground, Welsh Road and Tolbut Street. The incident occurred on July 28 at about 11:25 p.m. when a group of four males with guns held up five teenage victims.
About 90 minutes later, witnesses to the crime reported seeing a group of males resembling the robbers return to the playground in a white Pontiac. One of the suspects left the car and got into a black Hyundai owned by one of the robbery victims. Both vehicles left the area.
A short time later, Wagonsux spotted the Pontiac and stopped it at 3100 Willits Road. There were four suspects inside. Victims identified them as the robbers. Inside the car, police found items allegedly stolen in the robbery. All four suspects were charged in connection with the crime.
Police later found the stolen Hyundai abandoned outside the Victoria Woods Apartments on the 9600 block of Ashton Road.
It’s not the first time Wagonsux did something pretty amazing. Talking down a teenage jumper is an impressive feat in my book, too.

Jeez that used to be a pretty safe neighborhood. You would never hear about this kind of crime up there.
Congrats Wagonsux on a brave job!
Congratulations, Wagonsux! You all deserve a lot more for what you do, but it is nice to see that you’ve been honored.
YAY!
Nice job Wagoneer! Ahh Wyatt, reaching back to the early days of First In. Da man!
Thanks for the kind words. Wyatt, I’m not going to kick your ass for posting this, but I’m going to do something. I”ll let you sweat a bit while you try to figure out what I’m going to do. Keep looking over your shoulder… Bwa ha ha……
AJ – It’s worse than you would believe. The 15th (Mayfair/Frankford) is the busiest district in town.
RT – Don’t get nuts. He’ll get a swelled head.
Captain – That was a great photo op.
Wagonsux – Great, now I have to set up 24-hour surveillance.
It’s easy to bash all cops when one does something wrong, but the public always forgets that day in and day out, many, many more excel at doing the right thing.
