NOLA Residents: No Students Of History
By Wyatt Earp | September 1, 2008
“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” – Old Klingon Proverb
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — By Sunday, thousands of people had evacuated New Orleans, leaving behind a shell of a city.
In the French Quarter, the maroon, purple and pink buildings are the loneliest they’ve been in years. The weather is sunny, with no clouds, and extremely muggy. But there are plenty of signs of an approaching storm.
For some, leaving was a no-brainer. But for others, deciding to stay was just as easy.
We Yankees call these people “morons.”
Johnny White’s never closes. The Bourbon Street pub didn’t shut its doors once during Katrina, so the booze will not be interrupted here for Gustav.
“Turbo isn’t going to let anything happen to us,” bartender Marita Jager said, nodding toward her German Shepherd lying in the doorway, gnawing on a turkey leg. “He protects us from everything.”
Um, Turbo is a dog. He’ll drown just as quickly as the rest of you. Perhaps even sooner. But hey, what do I know? It’s not like a police officer would know anything about emergency situations.
“People need somewhere to go for some normality,” said Jager, pouring a gin and tonic. “We’re gonna stay open for the whole thing.” (H/T – CNN)
Maybe it’s me, but a hurricane blitzing through a city is not my idea of “normality.” Look, I admire their testicular fortitude, but Gustav is no joke. When their bodies wash up on shore at the end of it all, I don’t want to hear one word about it from their families.
I’m just sayin’.

Now it looks like they’ll be spared the worse part and the booze will flow. I’m happy the dog will be OK. I’m sure Nagin will get credit for using the school buses this time and somehow Bush will take the blame. Life as usual.

Why does the media always focus on the idiots? Do you know why New Orleans received so much attention during Katrina? The idiots!! The ones who sat on teh roofs, the ones who looted, the ones who refused to leave.
Mississippi’s ENTIRE Gulf Coast was wiped out and received WAY more damage than all of New Orleans but we received virtually no media coverage. Why? We didn’t have idiots who stayed behind and no idiots looting.
Why do you have to have idiots to receive attention?
Sorry! Just frustrated.

Bourbon Street sits much higher than the reest of the city and was pretty much spared during Katrina. If there’s someone to go during a storm, it’s Bourbon Street.

Les – The subtraction of that dullard Kathleen Blanco also helped matters greatly.
RT – And drunks are drunks.
Deanna – Not a problem. Most people who followed the Katrina stories know that Mississippi was handled expertly by Governor Barbour.
Randal – I wonder if they brought any beads with them . . . just in case?
