True Detective Stories

By Wyatt Earp | August 25, 2008

This week on Jackass . . .

Last night, I suffered through the worst comment I have ever heard in fourteen-plus years as a Philadelphia police officer. A woman came to the division’s window about eight hours after her husband was arrested for domestic violence. Allegedly, the husband beat her up after an argument, and was currently downstairs in the cell room. When the husband received his phone call, he used it wisely. This is exactly what the woman said to me:

“My husband called and asked me to come here and drop the charges against him.”

A few hours later, I awoke from my aneurysm and asked her to repeat what she said. She did, and I must have heard her correctly the first time. This toad had the gall to beat up his wife, get locked up, and then guilt her into coming to the division to try and drop the charges. Only in America!

Unfortunately for the husband, once you’re locked up, you’re locked up. I informed the wife that if she wanted to drop the charges, she would have to appear in court, and plead her case to the sitting judge. Nice try, though. I gave her (and her husband) an “A” for effort.

Nothing like a women of high intellect. How bad did he beat her up??

  2. Wyatt Earp says:

Old Soldier – Bad enough. Enough to make me shake my head that she actually listened to his request.

  3. Les James says:

I’m sure she thought she deserved it. Those two are a match made in heaven.

  4. Jeffro says:

It takes all kinds. Unfortunate for you professionally, but fortunately for blog fodder!

  5. leoni2 says:

I don’t know which is worst: that he use his one call to tell (I refused to believe he asked her) to drop the charges, or that she actually try to do so. Unbelieveable!!!

  6. RT says:

Dysfunction becomes normal the more one lives in it. Sad, but true.

  7. Tom says:

Having worked with a spouse abuse shelter, this does not surprise me one bit. It was a very common story. I’m surprised you haven’t run into it before.

  8. Wyatt Earp says:

    Les – Or Hell.

Jeffro – I almost laughed in her face when she said it, but I restrained myself.

Leoni2 – The cycle of violence continues. It’s a shame.

RT – Agreed. And they have a child.

Tom – We get women trying to drop domestic charges all the time, but this was the first time someone came right out and said “My husband asked me to drop the charges.”

Again, it is a real shame.

  9. I have to tell you all kidding aside that was a BRILLIANT call. Are you kidding? Asking her to drop the charges? Holy sh*t. I would have NEVER thought of that. I’ll bet in some states that could actually work. Makes you wonder what the guy could achieve if he wasn’t too busy beating the sh*t out of dopey.
